Honoring a leader by honoring the people

In recognition of his dedication and contribution to the advancement of the Kanienkeha:ka Kahnawakehro:non and First Nations across Canada in general, Willis College of Business & Technology in Ottawa, Ontario names a yearly Aboriginal scholarship after Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton.

Rima Aristocrat, college president and CEO, says she chose Chief Norton for leading his nation to economic and political success in his 24 years of service on the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake.

The scholarship, valued at $18,000, not only reflects the esteem Aristocrat holds for Chief Norton but her concern for Aboriginal education as well.

While attending a conference this past summer, Aristocrat saw George Bear entertain the delegates with his dancing and heard him speak on his struggles with education.

Bear's story moved Aristocrat to award him with a scholarship, which the college has decided to make a permanent educational resource for Aboriginal students.
